G8 Dementia Delegation

On 13 Dec a representative of the Remember a Day performance project (Airidas Budreckis – a Plymouth University student) answered questions about the project for the Japanese delegation from the G8 Dementia Summit 2013. The response was very positive with the delegation showing excitement about the potential for utilizing the techniques.

At Peninsula Arts Contemporary Music Festival 2014 (“Thinking Music”) Alexis will be premiering a piece “Remember a Day” for Cello, Soprano and Electronics, inspired by using music memory tunes or  jingles with lyrics to help people with dementia remember key facts, such as medication lists.

It will be a collaboration with a group of volunteers with dementia, and utilize prototype computer technology for auto-composing catchy memory tunes (think of the alphabet tune from school) to help those with dementia remember addresses, medication lists, etc. The collaborators’ tunes are incorporated into tje performance for soprano, cello and electronics. The performance will be introduced by Ian Sherriff, trustee of the Alzheimer’s Society, a member of the Dementia Friendly Communities Champion Group which reports directly to the Prime Minister, and chair of Plymouth University Dementia Group. On the day after this premiere Ian and Alexis will give a public festival talk on the development and composition of Remember a Day.

This performance is a partnership between Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University Dementia Group, and Innovations in Dementia CIC.

The performance will be at 8pm on Friday 7th Feb 2014 in the Sherwell Centre, Plymouth University, Plymouth, UK.
